Module 7 of Kidney School provides information about how laboratory testing is used to monitor kidney function, the effectiveness of dialysis treatments, and the overall health of people with chronic kidney disease. This module explains the most common tests, what they measure, and how to interpret the results. A table with normal lab values (and dialysis lab norms) is included. The purpose of Kidney School Continuing Education courses is to enable the learner to better understand the medical and psychosocial impacts of end stage renal disease, as well as patients’ experience of coping with this chronic condition.
Objectives
After taking this course, participants will be able to:
- List at least 3 electrolyte derangements that can be revealed by abnormal lab values.
- Identify the purpose and target ranges for key dialysis blood tests.
